The scope for taking greater collective control over energy generation through a National Energy Company was discussed in #35. In addition to this, it is possible for the proposed regional councils to create municipal energy supply companies. Every regional council could set up a company to sell electricity (and gas) to customers in their council area. By in effect creating a council-wide syndicate of citizens to bulk-purchase energy, it is possible not only to ensure democratic control over energy supply but also to reduce energy costs (profits would not be taken from customers to give to shareholders). Any profits made would be used to improve public services, or reduce local taxes. This would link collective control of a greater proportion of energy generation with greater collective control over energy supply to customers, and would therefore begin to provide greater security of energy supply and greater price security for energy users.
