We must change social attitudes and practices—the arenas were the unequal distribution and misuse of power plays out in the everyday. Those in positions of influence should set a positive example. This too has improved a lot in recent years and broadcasters, politicians, and senior figures in business and civic society are much more conscious of what represents inappropriate language on race, gender, religious affiliation, and sexuality. As a result, the public are becoming more aware of this issue. Unfortunately, this is not always true, and at times the language used about for example refugees has been dispiritingly hostile and dehumanising. Society collectively should continue to exert substantial pressure on those who use this kind of language.
