Another area directly linked to how towns and cities work is transport. As has been mentioned, transport infrastructure in Scotland is not particularly good and is seen by most as being substantially behind the European average. The problem is that it takes a substantial amount of time to put transport infrastructure in place and it is likely that by the time Scotland caught up with European norms, transport technology would have moved on again and Scotland would still be well behind the world leaders. There is therefore a strong case for Scotland taking a 'nextgen' strategy here as well. This would look at what the next generation of technologies would enable, look at how they would work in a Scottish context, and plan now for implementing them as part of a redesign of Scottish transport.
