One substantial intervention that cannot go ignored is reviving plans for a Scottish digital broadcast channel. Film and TV provides work for many artistic practices obviously including actors and the wide range of film and broadcast trades, but also for writers, artists, set designers, composers, musicians, costume designers, and more. Once a Scottish channel was in place, one major strand of its work should be to commission films for Scottish audiences. Filmmaking in Scotland simply lacks any serious critical mass and very few career options. Until we make more films we simply won't develop the infrastructure, skills, and experience which will enable us to produce a reliable flow of commercially successful films for a global audience (in the way Scandinavian film and TV has).
